A battalion of Irish-American soldiers, fighting against the Mexicans on St. Patrick's Day, suddenly began fighting for the Mexican side, feeling more in common with Catholic Mexico than the expansionist efforts of a Protestant-goverened United States. The US hung the captured soldiers as traitors. In Mexico, a monument remembers their act of faith.
